Occupancy 250Here I am almost 36 years ago, aged 37, playing at Einstein A Go-Go in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. In the spring of 1990 my girlfriend of the time Cynthia and I were driving around the USA on a prolonged solo acoustic tour, stopping at lots of small venues that weren’t financially viable for me to play with The Egyptians. I was having a break from playing rock music, drinking wine, and living the noisy life: my solo acoustic album EYE was just out on the independent label Twin Tone and I was enjoying the relatively low-key promotion that this involved. Cynthia did the intricate driving getting in and out of towns, and I took the wheel on the Interstates and long flat drives past telegraph poles and payphones. Just us, my Martin acoustic guitar, a chorus pedal and some T-shirts - the simple life, it seemed.
Einstein a Go-Go was a vital part of the Indie ecosystem, being one of the few ‘Alternative’-type clubs in that part of the world: to this day there are few venues for the likes of myself and other Indie veterans in Florida. Now it’s celebrated in this book Occupancy 250 - a whole host of young faces are in there that I’ve come to know as older ones, along with my own. I have fond memories of playing Einstein, and of that whole time. Thank you to whoever gave me the book - I found it in my bag when I returned from Athens GA the other day.
