with The Users and Patrik Fitzgerald.
Date confirmed in
Kimberley Rew's Soft Boys scrapbookWe have two written setlists from this gig, one from Kimberley's collection (kindly provided by Lee Cave-Berry) and one clearly written by Robyn (in his trademark scrawl) received as a photocopy from Stefan Cooke via Thomas Narten. Robyn's written setlist includes "Reggae Song"; if it was played this night, it was the first known live performance. It is featured in the images on this page. Big thanks to Thomas and Stefan!
Another image, which based on text bleedthrough looks to be on the back of a printed page of unknown purpose, features autographs signed at the same show; Morris signed as "Otis Fagg" and Andy as "The Pigworker." Robyn narrated his action with "Robyn Hitchcock signs an autograph." There are also a couple of other names on the sheet - Pete Bevington and John Bor; research indicates these gents were in punk band The Users who were labelmates of Soft Boys (the two bands were both on Raw Records at the time, the SBs having recently released "I Want to Be An Anglepoise Lamp") and per Kim's scrapbook the bands took turns opening for each other at Alex Wood Hall and the Nashville around this time. The
Punk Music Catalogue states that Robyn was a member of the Users in Sept '77, probably because he's credited as playing bass on their song "Bad Decision" published at that time. Eddie Tews' venerable
Robyn site lists a rehearsal tape from '78 or '79 in which the Soft Boys played "Bad Decision".
