The "Brainlode Benefit" was a 1980 London benefit concert organized to support two influential music fanzines:
Bucketfull of Brains and Comstock Lode. The "Special Mystery Guest" alluded to on the flyer was supposed to have been
Alex Chilton; Chilton ultimately did not participate, although his Wikipedia entry states he played two London gigs with Soft Boys Matthew and Morris as well as Knox (from the Vibrators) in May 1980. Their gig at Dingwalls was released as "Live in London" two years later.
The gig featured a lineup of legendary alternative artists, including Robyn Hitchcock and the Soft Boys, Brainiac5 (psychedelic-punk band formed in Cornwall in 1977), and The
Barracudas (psych-garage jangly power pop with surf influences, formed London 1978). The proceeds helped the publications continue covering the underground and psychedelic rock scenes.
