My Hitchcock awe was once again renewed during his LA show at Zebulon last night.
There were many specific songs I hoped for, but the unpredictable set lists are part of the fun when seeing him live; he’s got a deep, dark well of material to pull from—including many covers—and the between song banter never disappoints.

I’ve seen two previous tours at Zebulon featuring San Francisco’s Kelley Stoltz as the opener and Hitchcock’s drummer. He switched things up this time around with fantastic opening sets from Emma Swift and Jeremy Fetzer, who both did double duty backing Hitchcock during his set. Hitchcock’s band also included the rock solid rhythm section of bassist Todd Bolden and drummer Patrick Berkery.

The crowd was treated to a career-spanning set starting with solo takes on “Raymond Chandler Evening” and “I Often Dream of Trains.” Full-band highlights included “So You Think You’re In Love,” “Autumn Sunglasses,” “Madonna of the Wasps,” and back-to-back Soft Boys favorites “Insanely Jealous” and “I Wanna Destroy You.”

The band ended their set with an encore of “Dear Prudence” and “All Along The Watchtower” before Hitchcock and Swift’s guitarist Luther Russell closed the night by wandering the crowd with acoustic guitars for a spirited Beatles singalong.

A fitting end to another perfect night of exploring Robyn Hitchcock’s magical realms.

Robyn Hitchcock is greater than ever. In fine voice, with his tarantula fingers dancing around the fretboard of his beloved polka-dot Telecaster, he and the band through a torrid ‘give the people what they want' set list that focused on his A&M Records years (that no doubt introduced him to many of people packing the room), while delivering just enough of the standard gems from The Soft Boys and his early solo career for hard timers like me.
He finished the night strolling through the audience with his old friend Luther Russell leading us in a jubilant ‘All You Need Is Love’ and ‘She Loves You’. wonderful!
