The penultimate date of my recent US tour was at Levon Helm's Barn up in Woodstock. People in the know told us that the Barn was haunted by the ghost of Levon himself. Haunted is an understatement - you could feel the life of the man pouring out of every wall. I grew up a major fan of The Band. Seeing photos, record sleeves, press cuttings, letters, and memorabilia all beaming out from the wooden walls - walking around Levon's inner sanctum on my way to sound check - I found myself quietly in tears. Not through sadness but just with an unusual sense of belonging. I could feel the river of music stretching away before and behind me and my tiny place in it. It was, as hauntings go, a very reassuring one. The house sound engineer, Brendan McDonough, helped Levon himself construct the Barn earlier this century, and the sound in there, even before Brendan activates the PA, is exquisite. Singing with Emma that night was even more of a joy than usual - I could see the arc of our voices curving around the rafters above us like whippoorwills. Sound becomes vision at certain points for me, and this was one of them.
