Opening act: Double Cross
From Robyn on Substack in 2025
However, occasionally some legendary muso from the pages of the NME would wander into our timid circle. In the Iroquois bar before our second show at Maxwell’s a stray Sex Pistol began plying a Soft Boy (Kimberley Rew) with bourbon and Coke. Kim was never much of a drinker, but, ever the gentleman, was too polite to refuse the stream of alcohol being poured into him. He seemed fine, apart from making a few bird noises, which was not his general way of responding to things. At Maxwell’s however, I suddenly heard a voice from my left requesting the small audience to move closer to the stage. It was Kim; he’d never spoken on stage before! To demonstrate, he put down his guitar and ran around behind the little crowd, herding them forward, sheep-dog style. They complied, bemused; Kim then bounded back onstage, picked up his guitar and the show went on. None of us mentioned this afterwards: the Soft Boys was a “don’t ask, don’t tell” clan.
