A very enjoyable evening below decks on The Golden Hinde, a reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s 16th century galleon. A very hot night but not as oppressive as the St Albans gig a few years ago. The large fan at stage left did a good job. A crowd of around 100 or so (including comedian Stewart Lee and actor Kevin Eldon) were treated to two nicely paced and varied sets, comprising:
I Got The Hots For You
1974
I Pray When I’m Drunk
Alright Yeah
The Devil’s Coachman
The Inner Life Of Scorpio
Glass
My Wife And My Dead Wife
Hurry For The Sky
I’m Only You
Interval
The Wreck Of The Arthur Lee
The Ghost Ship (rather inevitably)
Raymond Chandler Evening
Raymond And The Wires
Gigolo Aunt (Syd cover)
Birds in Perspex
I Wanna Destroy You
Airscape
Encore (no gap)
Clean Steve
Waterloo Sunset
See Emily Play
A Day In The Life
After Alright Yeah, RH lost his “black triangle“ pick and spent a while scouring the wooden floor for it, to no avail. He claimed Hurry For The Sky was written for a film about Brian Epstein’s marketing deal with The Beatles in the US, which never came out.
The back to back Raymond songs were concluded by RH saying the only other Raymond he knew was Captain Sensible (real name Ray Burns), who’s very unlike the other two. Raymond Chandler Evening featured a change of lyrics which was something about birds followed by “there’s blood all over everything/And I don’t know where to look”.
Clean Steve was performed after a shout out for requests. I suggested St Petersburg to which RH emitted a slight chuckle. The out of favour Mark Ellen was replaced in the lyrics by Andy Kershaw.
I’m back for more tonight with RH promising to change the set around a bit. I did take some pics but they didn't come out well, hopefully Matt E can put up some of his infinitely superior ones.
