Robyn Hitchcock & The Minus 3 (Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey & Bill Rieflin). Scott McCaughey on lead vocals on 'Cigarettes Coffee And Booze' & 'Aw Shit Man'.
Went to Copenhagen last week to see Robyn Hitchcock & The Minus 3. They played at Loppen - quite an interesting place in the "freetown" of Christiania*. Loppen is in an old storehouse, quite small and with a "stage" only one foot high... So, since the audience was also very small, I stood only about five feet from Robyn.
It was a good show, everyone had a good time and Robyn's dance moves got wilder and wilder... He sure is fascinating to watch! Not much talking between songs, but the night's two major themes were:
1. Real or pretended cofusion about the setlist and "who's starting this song?" Quite charming.
2. The A chord and it's advantages - "this is yet another song in A... some of my best songs are in A..." etc etc
In the encore they played two completely new songs, after which he talked about the new album he's currently recording: "it will be out in october, but these songs won't be on it..."
This was only my second RH show (the first was the one that completely and insanely turned me on) so it was quite breathtaking actually; all those good songs; all that good playing (the band's so good!); all that twitching and writhing - what more can a man ask for?!
Sincerely,
Jens
The setlist, as I recalled it on the train back to Malmö (not in the right order, probably):
Queen of Eyes
Beautiful Queen
Madonna of the Wasps
Driving Aloud (Radio Storm)
I Wanna Destroy You
Creeped Out
Ole Tarantula
Adventure Rocket Ship
N.Y. Doll (Arthur Kane) (new song, good!)
Jewels for Sophia
Somewhere Apart
Sally Was A Legend
Encore:
Cigarettes, Coffee & Booze
Aw, Shit Man
After Light (new song, first time played)
Propeller Time (new song, first time played)
It's Not Dark Yet
Eight Miles High (long "psychedelic" version...)
Give It To The Soft Boys
* Christiania is an old "hippie town" created in the seventies; an abandoned military area was occupied by people with ideas about creating something new. Strangely enough
Christiania has survived more than thirty years of "war" with the danish authorities, but with the current (kind of fascist) regime, it seems like it's days are numbered - visit it before it's gone! it's a really fascinating place!
