Reviews

Jessica Lee Morgan and Chris Thomas opened the evening with an engaging and enjoyable set: good to see them again following on from a support slot in Brighton earlier this year.

A brief catch up with old friends in the interval and Robyn took to the stage. He played his acoustic last night; I love watching his fluid technique and superb style. Some typically surreal in between song chat took us to an alternative origin of Hassocks, an ancient watery flow from Brighton into mid-Sussex, reminiscing about his Dad and young Robyn’s enduring fascination with trolley buses, and the hint of possible memoire (up until 1967), among things. Some persistent talking during the first few songs led to Robyn having to deal with them In an uncompromising and entirely justifiable manner, which did the trick (so strange that people feel the need to talk during a gig, we’ve seen it happen many a time over the years, but you do wonder why they bother coming).

Jess and Chis joined him for the ‘encore’ with Jess playing the sax solo on ‘Soul Love’, and adding some great backing & harmony vocals.
Having left the stage Robyn was encouraged back on by an enthusiastic (and good-sized) crowd. He left us with the Beatles followed by “the other one from that time” Dylan.
Happily I got the chance to thank him in person for a fabulous gig.

I was totally immersed in the evening so I only took a couple of swift photos and no ‘notes’ so the set list below is incomplete … maybe others can add to it?

Awesome show in Hassocks! Thanks to everyone who made us welcome. Robyn had to deal with a couple of chatters who finished their pints and flounced out, thankfully. But everyone else was awesome. Chris and I got up to join on the encores. I didn’t see a set list for Robyn on stage. But the encores with us were Airscape, Oceanside, Soul Love and Queen of Eyes. I played sax on Soul Love, a song that he played with us in Carnegie Hall in 2016 for a Bowie celebration. We hadn’t played it together since then, not even in sound check! Robyn was persuaded back on stage with a pint of Guinness to play A Day In The Life and Visions of Johanna (but I may be wrong on the last as I’m no Dylan expert!)

I wore my cowboy shirt and checked that we wouldn’t clash. Robyn wore a dark shirt with swishy brush patterns.
