Whimsical English surrealism
Rock can be raunchy, serious and so much more. For Robyn Hitchcock, play is an important element and a good starting point for a surreal journey through rock history.
The Englishman with a past in the cult band Soft Boys talks like John Lennon, has REM guitarist Peter Buck in his current band and sounds like he is closely related to his legendary Cambridge city friend, Syd Barrett.
But he doesn't need the three to make a mark on his own, because his music is both bouncy and playful, cultivating the slightly eccentric side of English psychedelia. With bouncy melodies, lots of whimsy, strong harmonies and, not least, melodious guitars that enhance the soundscape.
And the guitar is provided by Peter Buck, who instead of taking it easy while REM is on hiatus, has chosen to join Robyn Hitchcock's new band The Venus Three. And sympathetically, he keeps a very low profile and lets the guitar do the talking, while leaving the rest of the talking and the stage to Hitchock.
Something the Englishman does so well, that it only remains to remind us that the gang will be back in Norway soon. Or as Hitchock put it, "in the future or the past". Which in more understandable Norwegian means the Down On The Farm festival in August.
