This brewery and pub frequented by Robyn's early bands was a major music venue for much of the 1980s, even featuring on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Along with The Salisbury, it was a CAMRA Investments pub. Per Kimberley Rew's great Soft Boys scrapbook, bands who played the Alma in the evening were required to play a lunchtime jam session earlier the same day.
It seems to still exist and we found these notes on a site that rates pubs in the area (notes are in reverse chronological order, starting with most recent):
The keen Aussie landlord left in Summer 2004, causing a hiatus, e.g. no real ale for a while. A major feature is the fish tank in a red telephone box. However as of late 2003, the piranhas in it seem to have gone. Breakfast served from 10am. Big-screen TV. Reopened on 17th November 1999 with three real ales (IPA, Rumpus and ESX) plus a one-off (Big Tackle). The decor of a warm red is arguably somewhat overdone. The stage has been retained, with a pool table normally on it. The fairly loud piped music sometimes playing may put some people off but otherwise it's much improved. Sold by Pubmaster in 1999 to Ridleys Brewery. In the 1990s was an increasingly sad place, usually out of most keg or cask beers and seemingly with an under-18s-only policy.
