Tiffany's (Scunthorpe) Notes Gigs

Details

Scunthorpe, England
UK

Robyn has played this venue 1 time.

Notes

Not to be confused with Tiffany's in Edinburgh, where the Boys played in '78.

The building was constructed in 1938 as the Ritz Cinema, and was the nightclub known as Tiffany's from 1974 to 1984. It ceased to be an entertainment venue in 2014 and was demolished in early 2015. It's not clear if the name of the venue used an apostrophe or not; in the photo on the following web page, there is no apostrophe on the building or vertical sign, but there is one in the marquee.

Tiffanys was one of the best-known social venues in Scunthorpe for almost a decade.

Party-goers flocked to the Doncaster Road venue after the building was acquired by Mecca in September 1974, having previously been used as a cinema.

From then, it was the place to go at night time for a generation of revellers in the town.

Crowds packed into the venue for events such as Miss England contests, Halloween parties and a tramps' ball, while food items were on offer from 10p and those wanting to hang their coats up were charged a cloakroom fee of 5p.

Other notable events to be hosted at Tiffanys included, from 1982, an annual Mecca/Scunthorpe Telegraph rock contest, open to bands from across northern Lincolnshire.

In May 1983 a £10,000 revamp was announced for the venue, with the bold forecast: "It looks as though Tiffs could be part of the local scene until at least the year 2017."

However, the Telegraph suggested that the opening of an alternative Scunthorpe nightspot that October by entrepreneur Don Robinson and his partner Malcolm Stephenson "sounded the death knell for Tiffanys."

The rival Scene Three disco complex attraction, on Normanby Road, left Mecca to revise its options on the Doncaster Road venue, the Telegraph said.

And Tiffanys went on to close in January 1984, with the loss of 19 full-time and part-time jobs.

However, this was by no means the end of the line for the building as a venue.

On September 3, 1985 the Telegraph carried a large picture of the building under the heading Nearing Completion.

"The signs are up at Scunthorpe’s new Ice Scene rink, ready for the first skaters to arrive next week," readers were informed.

Kunick Leisure Group installed a rink capable of accommodating 300 skaters and added the Scene Four "fun pub".

Professional coaching was made available to novice skaters.

The venture was officially opened on September 16, 1985 by the Mayor and Mayoress of Scunthorpe, Councillor and Mrs Russ Mitchell, and Lorna Thew, of Kunick Leisure.

On September 5, 1986 the Telegraph ran a further article headed Pub with nightclub touch.

It revealed: "Scunthorpe’s trendy young things now have another haunt – Rumours, dubbed as a pub with a night club atmosphere."

It was said that the owners of "the swish new joint" were hoping it would attract young, trendy and upwardly mobile customers.

"The best way to describe Rumours, formerly Scene Four, in the same building as the Ice Scene skating rink, is dark but with an expensive feel," the Telegraph suggested.

"The ceilings are full of ultra-violent lights, which make bright clothing glow brightly, and licensee Julie Roberts says customers are already turning up wearing white.

"Then there are the six television screens lining the walls. These add to the image as pop videos play, accompanied by a belting sound system.
