Here are two early incarnations of songs that some of you may be familiar with from my 2004 record "Spooked".
These demos of "Sometimes A Blonde" and "Full Moon in My Soul" were recorded in London, 2003 at Gravity Shack in Tooting. Ding, ding!
The personnel is: Kimberley Rew and self on guitar, Terry Edwards on keyboards and saxophone, Morris Windsor on drums & harmonies, and Paul Noble on bass.
Both of these tunes had some way to evolve before I got them on tape in Nashville with Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings at their Woodland Studios. Looking back it’s odd to see the words and melodies heading for places that they never quite reached.
At Woodland, Gillian & Dave helped me splice a new song “Ghosts Walk” into “Sometimes A Blonde” so this early demo is quite a different creature to one that wound up being released. "Full Moon In My Soul" in its London demo format is more or less the same shape but with a spikier outline.
I had no inkling when Ms Welch and Mr Rawlings introduced me to 5 Points in East Nashville that I would wind up living there ten years later as their neighbour. You never know how big a part a blonde is going to play in your life until they’re playing it...
