Stars of Joy! I am as excited as my damp British exterior permits to share with you this rough mix of “Breathless”. It’s an outtake from the sessions I’ve been doing here in Nashville over the last few months for a brand new album.
My songs have often been about the shock of existence. On this clutch of sonic eggs they’re also about the shock of not existing at all: disintegration stalks through the corridors like a reverse midwife. To me it’s the most fun collection I’ve made: a dystopian party soundtrack intercut with my takes on tender love songs. For love is the phoenix that always shakes the rubble from its wings and rises up above and beyond the collapsing masonry. This composition “Breathless” chronicles desire and collapse, which I love to see leaving the party hand in hand.
A lot of this fun is due to the Nashville cats who played on these sessions with me. On this track I’m playing the wah-wah and backwards guitar; the superb musicians accompanying are:
Jeremy Fetzer - electric guitar
Todd Bolden - bass guitar
Eric Slick - drums and all manner of percussion.
The sessions were engineered and produced by Brad Jones, who shepherded me through the harmonies and patiently guided me through the minefield of reverse guitar-picking.
