Here’s another song written in a hotel room. This one was in the Grand (and only) Hotell in Egersund, a small fishing port on the south coast of Norway. It was raining, of course, and between excursions to the local cafe for open-topped prawn sandwiches and coffee, I was playing the guitar in my room when this song began to materialise. The distance between my wife back home in Nashville and me by the North Sea was touching some deep nerves and a kaleidoscope of old emotions ground patterns in my head. However, whilst the tune and structure came very quickly, the lyrics changed every time I sang it. The ones I’m singing on this take, recorded a month or so later in Cardiff, have been modified since, I’m sure; but the feeling remains the same.

I’m most indebted to Steve Wynn for introducing me to local musician Frode Stromstad, who runs the annual boutique indie/psych festival in Egersund. Indeed, Frode has worked hard to bring his hometown into focus for those of us who perform in this particular musical seam. Sweet Home Egersund - it rocks!

Frode and his colleague Anne Lise Frøkedal have made some exquisite records - and still do - in their jangle-rock combo I Was A King. Their lyrics are all in English, but their songs have a soulful gravitas peculiar to Scandinavia. And you can’t get much more soulful than Norway, I reckon. Well, I can’t, anyway…
