Co-writing songs doesn’t come naturally to me: Andy Partridge is the only person I know with whom a song can evolve line-by-line and the whole composition emerges fairly seamless.
However, recently Kelley Stoltz texted me about 45 seconds of a song that stopped abruptly. I assumed he wanted me add to it, so I did: I added another 2 whole minutes, I think, which I texted back to him.
Next day, Kelley emailed me a completed backing track of the whole song. He had kept some of my additions, changed others, and brought the piece to a conclusion in under 3 minutes. Yaysville!
I then added a lead vocal, backing voices, and a potpourri of lead guitars from Charlie’s studio in Cardiff where I happened to be that weekend.
I don’t know if this track is completely finished yet, but I think it sounds fantastic and - with Kelley’s blessing - wanted to share it with you.
The lyrics seem to be about our gradual (or rapid) merger with our cellphones, a topic that much preoccupies me as the consequences for the future of humanity seem infinite. Just sayin’.
