From Robyn on Patreon in 2023 I wrote a lot of songs in my empty house on the Isle of Wight in the early 1990s. Some of them wound up on the Respect album, and a couple on Moss Elixir. This one I never finished: there were so many different verses. So here I’ve collected the ones that seem to work best with each other. It takes only a few variations in lyric to change the effect of a song radically, as Bob Dylan’s outtake archive proves. The song that reaches the listener’s ear is often an arbitrary selection of lyrics from the maelstrom of its creator’s mind. If this world is truly the work of God, just imagine the outtakes…
This is another English family values song, celebrating the way we are to each other, and the death wish that seems to lie at our core. The tune has lodged in my head over the last 30 years, so here it is at last, fresh from a serene drawing room in London.
