Occasionally there’s a big bang, and the clock springs back to zero. Mostly, though, change is gradual: from orange to red, from dawn to sunrise, from full to half-full, from loving to forgetful, from peaceful to suspicious - and then further and further still, until everything becomes the opposite of itself. Change is the law. You can’t be arrested for breaking it because you can’t break it. The scene changes and you change with it. The trees are bare, the sky is dark, the cupboard is empty: bones rattle in the dusty garage that still smells of autumn’s apples. Grandpa’s hat nestles faithfully on his grave like a little dog. The memories we hoard in our lifetime are scattered to the wind as our skulls dissolve. But you could never say exactly when any of this began…
