From Robyn on Patreon in 2022
This poignant little vignette was unearthed recently in my desk drawer. It’s poignant because it was written for a TV pilot that Jonathan Demme was planning to direct, and even more so as it features the great Bill Rieflin on drums and harmonies. Both of them are gone now…
….but they weren’t then. Jonathan was slated to direct a pilot show featuring, of all things, a man sharing a house with their dead spouse! He was looking for a 90-second song, hence the brevity of this one. I recruited a band comprising Bill on drums, Grant Lee Phillips on guitars and bass, and Sean Nelson on harmonies, who all happened to be in LA at the time. We also played a show at Gary Calamar’s house (hello Gary) and an awards ceremony, in March 2011.
In the end, nothing came of the TV pilot, and the song lay dormant on a memory stick. It’s a glimpse of what might have been, and that’s often easier to love than what actually did happen…
Recorded at Bright Studios, Los Angeles 2011
Bill Rieflin - drums & harmony vocals
Grant Lee Phillips - bass & harmony vocals
Sean Nelson - harmony vocals
*Note: I doubt Robyn's memory of the year on this as the award show I think he mentions is the Independent Spirit Awards that took place in 2009, not 2011 - see
