From Robyn on Patreon in 2022 Down by the River Mersey, in Liverpool, there’s a big flat area called Albert Docks. Giant Victorian edifices peer down at the cobbles - look around and you’ve stepped into a collage from the movie Yellow Submarine. The grandeur of Imperial Britain, and all the money it made from its unholy exploits - they still put you in your place. Which these days is a cafe or a museum - it’s nice down there, friendly for tourists.
Nonetheless, we couldn’t find our place when the band and I were looking for our hotel there a few years ago on tour. Yes, we could see the hotel, shimmering like a mirage in the spring sunshine, but we couldn’t actually find the road that led there. For ages we threaded around the labyrinth of the dockland, seeing but never reaching. Then, suddenly, as if there’d been an edit in the movie - we arrived. When I eventually got into my room, I pulled some fruit out of my bag, picked up my notebook, and this song appeared…
