Notes from Robyn on Patreon in 2020.
Here’s another song recorded in Cardiff in the summer of 2013. I had just written it when this demo was made, so it is very fresh and green. I re-recorded it for The Man Upstairs sessions that autumn in London with Joe Boyd, but maybe by then some of the green had worn off - it never made the album. One of my more Incredible String Band-y compositions, here it is, undulating at you from 7 years ago...

Lyrics

With your face upon the table
In your photograph it's flat, but it's still you
It's your face upon the table
Gazing up at me, your grey-green eyes so blue

I just know you for a second
I just know you for a blip in time as time
And I know where time is going
If we're lucky it'll go somewhere sublime

You don't have to be a reason
You don't have to put your name down early
You don't have to be an answer
Just a line (?)

Heard you singing through evening
Heard your voice a-calling thought the rafters
All the words are disappearing
Into nightingales they fly up after dark

Open up your other window
Open up your other eye in time is dark
Open up your other ceiling
Puffing's anywhere and no one's there to pass (?)

You don't have to be tomorrow
You don't have to a place where time stops dead
You don't have to be the answer
Just a lark (?)

I don't know about belonging
Everything is always where you leave it
I'm just hanging in your orchard
I'm the message there if you retrieve it
Ahhhhhh

You don't have to be a beacon
You don't have to be a time when things are good
There's no money or salvation
Just a naaaaaa (?)
