I first heard this Basement Tapes outtake on a crackly bootleg record on a bleak November afternoon in Cambridge. The paint seemed to flake off the song: over a ghostly backing from the Band, Bob Dylan sketches out lyrics that for some tantalizing reason he never bothered to finish. It was such a haunting piece of music: could almost have been on the first Leonard Cohen album. Maybe Dylan felt the song was too ethereal to actually finish.

So if you want to sing this song, you have to channel your inner Basement Bob and finish it yourself. Here is my version, transcribed in Sydney and recorded in Cardiff. Hope you like it…
