Spanning decades and musical styles, this far-ranging program of short films and videos culled from the Bob Dylan Archive in Tulsa, Oklahoma, features rare and previously unreleased clips of Dylan onstage and in the studio, as well as a glimpse into the Archive’s film restoration project. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins and Nashville-based singer-songwriters Robyn Hitchcock and Emma Swift. Pete Finney, a musician, a journalist, and the co-curator of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City exhibition (2015–2018), will lead the conversation. Presented in partnership with the Bob Dylan Center.

It is with a zinging heart that I contemplate this afternoon when I’ll lucky enough to participate in another Bob Dylan event. The Country Music Hall of Fame here in Nashville will be screening a series of film clips of Dylan performing live going back over 60 years, and I will be on a panel discussing them, moderated by the wonderful Steve Jenkins from the Dylan Center in Tulsa. It’s a chance to witness the arc of Dylan’s trajectory from solo performer to rock star to self-encased legend, and discuss it with fellow devotees.
We each have our Own Personal Bob: that’s the nature of devotion. Mine is the supernova’d mannequin of 1966 with the exploding hair, cigarette and sunglasses - the man who invented himself. Dylan returned to that template several times later in his career, with varying degrees of success. But others on the panel will have very different takes on Mr D, and the fun will be hearing us airing our contrasting views. All of us will be right, of course…
My fellow panelist Emma Swift and I also get to sing one Dylan song each: stars of joy! But how to pick just one from the firmament of genius that is Dylan’s oeuvre? Come along and find out! The event starts at 2.30pm. Tickets here:
