Guess who I ran into at HIPNIC yesterday? Jonathan Richman! He and I plough parallel furrows: his show was a delight as ever. Jonathan’s songs are like thinking out loud, sad and funny simultaneously, like Dylan at his best. His drummer Tommy Larkins was ace as ever, sideways on to the audience playing a micro-kit.
The old hippie groover in me is in his happy place, driving up the coast from LA to San Francisco with my psychedelic rock band, courtesy of Kelley Stoltz. He’s drumming for me and also playing guitar in a different configuration of the same band. Tonight we reach Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, with Kelley’s band opening the show and backing me up. On Wednesday we play San Francisco the Chapel with Emma Swift opening. Thursday May 22 is a special treat: we’re performing my fave songs from 1967 also at the Chapel, with Kelley and his gang opening. Come on over for a vintage Trips Festival in Real Time.
