Portrait photos of Robyn taken before the show by Countfeed on FlickrPhotos of the show by Countfeed on FlickrLike a lot of people, I often dream of talking to Robyn Hitchcock about trolleys, but had I known he would quote me verbatim from the stage, I might have been a bit more precise in my description of the geography of the green line and the restoration of the streetcars that is underway. No matter, though, as he sounded intrigued and excited enough about SEPTA trolleys to secure Philly a spot on his itinerary when he comes around next year for a proper tour in support of Shufflemania!—perhaps with a full band.
In the meantime, it was terrific to get to hear a chunk of the new album during his semi-surprise six-song set opening for Emma Swift at World Cafe Live, with Hitchcock’s voice and guitar sounding exceptionally limber on new songs like “The Inner Life of Scorpio,” “The Man Who Loves the Rain,” and “The Shuffle Man,” as well as on the throwback “Balloon Man.”
