English singer-guitarist Robyn Hitchcock and his two-man Egyptians (bass and drums) opened the concert with some fascinating non-arena rock drenched in 60s San Francisco psychedelic experimentation, noodling guitar solos out of the Grateful Dead-Quicksilver-early Airplane school and lyrics about' frogs and insects delivered with a Beatles attention, to song structure. Peter Buck, who played on Hitchcock's new Queen Elvis album, joined the band on 12-string electric guitar for its last three songs.
Along with wiry electric guitar musings, Hitchcock also offered some very focused pop songs with socio-political lyric matter.
